How not to make a terrarium

Yes, you read it correctly-this is an instruction how NOT to make a terrarium. The purpose of this article is to show you how to make a beautiful tropical terrarium that's going to look like a wreck after a few days.

So you guys know that I was planning to transfer my Sceloporus malachiticus (Emerald swifts) to a new tank. I was given a new terrarium in exchange for feeder insects and I decided to use it as a new tank for those lizards.
Jak już wiecie, planowałam przenieść moje Sceloporus malachiticus (Legwaniki malachitowe) do nowego pojemnika. Dostałam nowe terrarium w zamian za karmówkę i zdecydowałam, że użyję go właśnie jako nowy dom dla tych jaszczurek.

So, first I'll show you what I did step by step and at the end I'll tell you what stupid mistakes I made.
Najpierw pokażę Wam jak robiłam je krok po kroku, a na koniec napiszę jak głupie blędy popełniłam.

The first thing I did was covering every inner surface with three layers of something that's called liquid glass (I'm afraid there's no English equivalent to this). This chemical is non-toxic and it is supposed to protect against moisture.
Pierwszą rzeczą którą zrobiłam było pokrycie trzema warstwami szkła wodnego każdej wewnętrznej powierzchni. Ten środek jest nietoksyczny i ma za zadanie chronić przed wilgocią.

What made me think was that after applying it, the surface looked as if it was wet, but wasn't-it created big drops. It looked awful, but what the hell-it would be covered, so I didn't have to worry.
To co mnie trochę zdziwiło to to, że po nałożeniu powierzchnia wyglądała jak mokra-potworzyły się taki duże krople. Ale i tak miało to wszystko być schowane, więc nie było czym się martwić.

It does look like it's wet, doesn't it? But believe me-it was completely dry.
Wygląda zupełnie jak mokre, nie? Zapewniam, że warstwa jest już całkowicie sucha.

As you can see in the picture above, the vent holes are way too big-feeder insects would have no trouble in getting out of the tank. This is why I had to cover it with metal mesh.
Jak widać na zdjęciu powyżej, otwory wentylacyjne były o wiele za duże-owady karmowe nie miałyby najmniejszych problemów z wydostaniem się z terrarium. Dlatego musiałam przykryć wentylację drobną metalową siatką.

I forgot to mention that even before attaching the mesh, I put some glass at the bottom of the tank. This is the place where moisture might be an issue, so it required extra protection. The panes are sealed with silicone.
Zapomniałam wspomnieć, że przed przymocowaniem siatki, przykleiłam do dna szklane szyby. To w tym miejscu wilgoć mogłaby być największym problemem, więc trzeba było tę powierzchnię dodatkowo zabezpieczyć. Szyby uszczelniłam silikonem.

Next, I attached a background wall-the only element that I had ordered.
Następnie przymocowałam ozdobną ściankę-to jedyny element, którego sama nie wykonałam, tylko zamówiłam.

Although it was tailored, I had problems with fitting it in. As you can see above, some glass even broke as a result of pushing it in. Nevertheless, I managed to seal those cracks.
Choć była zrobiona na miarę, miałam kłopoty z włożeniem jej. Jak widać powyżej, trochę szkła popękało przez próby wepchnięcia jej. Pęknięcia bez problemu udało się zabezpieczyć silikonem.

The next step involved decorating the side walls. Here I used my old method-expanded cork glued with silicone.
Następny etap polegał na ozdobieniu ścianek bocznych. I tu użyłam mojej starej metody-korek ekspandowany przyklejony silikonem.

I even found some use for my weights and German dictionary :D
Nawet znalazłam zastosowanie dla moich hantelków i słownika niemieckiego :D

It was getting late and I needed some source of light so it was time to attach the lamp.
Robiło się już późno, więc trzeba było zamontować oświetlenie.

And now I could see what I was doing ;D
I wreszcie widziałam co robię ;D

In order for the cork not to look dull, I attached a shelf, some extra pieces of wood and, as usual, I tore the cork a bit using a fork.
Żeby korek nie wyglądał nudno, zrobiłam półeczkę, przymocowałam dodatkowo trochę drewna i, jak zwykle, poszarpałam trochę korek widelcem.

Remember: all you have to do to make the cork look like this is the press it with the fork and turn, press and turn.
Pamiętajcie: żeby osiągnąć efekt nie równego korka należy wbić widelec i przekręcić, wbić i przekręcić.

It's advisable to leave the cork litter inside the tank-this will improve drainage. I also added some leca with the same purpose.

But that's not all. I wanted to grow some moss. I've lately learned about a technique called moss graffiti that you can use to make graffiti made of moss. I thought that it would be a nice thing to have lots of fresh moss inside. So I mixed some yoghurt with bits of moss and a bit of sugar and made a nasty-looking soup.
Ale to nie wszystko. Chciałam wyhodować trochę mchu. Przeczytałam ostatnio o technice, która się nazywa moss graffiti polegającej na robieniu graffiti z mchu. Pomyślałam, że fajnie by było mieć trochę świeżego mchu w środku. Więc zmieszałam jogurt z kawałkami mchu, dodałam troszkę cukru i wyszła mi ohydna zupka. 

I spread it over the decorations and it really looked like shit ;D

For the first two days the terrarium looked amazing.

But since the third day all I've had is trouble :(

Now it's time to tell you about my cardinal errors. NEVER EVER MAKE THESE 3 MISTAKES!!!
A teraz powiem Wam o zasadniczych błędach. NIGDY PRZENIGDY NIE POPEŁNIJCIE TYCH 3 BŁEDÓW!!!

The first act of stupidity was to use that liquid glass. I've heard so many good things about it: how well it protects against moisture, how solid it is. In my case, combined with moisture in the tank, it turned into some glueish fluid that started to drip onto the whole terrarium. It stained the glass and decorations permanently and destroyed some of the plants :(
Pierwszym aktem głupoty było użycie tego szkła wodnego. Słyszałam o nim tyle dobrych rzeczy: jak to dobrze chroni przed wilgocią, jak twarde się staje. W moim przypadku, w połączeniu z wilgocią w terrarium zamieniło się w kleistą ciecz, która zaczęła kapać na całe terrarium. Na stałe zabrudziło mi to szyby i dekoracje i zniszczyło kilka roślin :(

I wiped it all off the ceiling and it no longer drips. I hope it will sustain the moisture under the wall decorations.
Starłam to z sufitu, więc już nie kapie. Mam nadzieję, że pod ściankami jakoś to się będzie sprawdzać. 

Another mistake was the mesh. How silly can I be not to realize it's not rustless? I mean, I bought two types of mesh, I assumed that they are both rustless, but only one was. And it's the other one :(
Następnym błędem była metalowa siatka. Jak durna musiałam być, żeby nie zauważyć, że nie jest nierdzewna? Kupiłam dwa rodzaje siatki i wydawało mi się, że obie są nierdzewne, a była tylko jedna-ta druga :(

The rusty mesh is not a problem at all at the moment. It only looks like borrowed for Silent Hill ;<
Zardzewiała siatka na razie nie stanowi żadnego problemu. Wygląda tylko jak pożyczona z Silent Hill ;<

And the third act of stupidity was of course that moss graffiti thingy. That was a baaaad idea. On the third day, when I woke up, everything was covered with mould. And I mean everything! It was a total disaster and made me want to cry. I didn't take any photos back then because I don't want to remember that sight. But, believe me or not, I managed to kill it off almost completely. I removed the lizards, opened the tank, kept the light on almost 24/7, used some vinegar on the mould and it disappeared almost completely. I also invited some centipedes into the terrarium as I've read they feed on mould.
A trzecim aktem głupoty było oczywiście to moss graffiti. To był naprawdę kiepski pomysł. Trzeciego dnia, gdy wstałam rano, wszystko było pokryte pleśnią. Naprawdę wszystko! To była totalna katastrofa, aż mi się płakać chciało. Nie zrobiłam wtedy żadnych zdjęć, bo nie chcę pamiętać tego widoku. Ale, uwierzcie lub nie, pokonałam ją już prawie całkowicie. Wyjęłam jaszczurki, otworzyłam terrarium żeby się wietrzyło, miałam światło włączone prawie całą dobę, poczęstowałam pleśń octem i znikła już prawie cała. Zaprosiłam też do terrarium stonogi, bo słyszałam, że zjadają pleśń.

Anyway, as you can see, it's not so easy to establish a terrarium without any problems. I hope I won't have any more major troubles with that tank.
Jak widzicie, nie jest łatwe zrobienie terrarium beż żadnych problemów. Mam nadzieję, że z tym pojemnikiem już nie będzie większych kłopotów.

My snake's guest

My male snake has had a guest for a few days-a beautiful female.
Mój wężulek od kilku dni ma gościa-piękną samicę.

Well...he isn't interested at all :/ Maybe he's too shy?
No cóż...nie jest zainteresowany ani troszkę:/ Może się wstydzi?


I've finished the terrarium I mentioned last time. But before I show it to you I have to make some observations.
Skończyłam już terrarium o którym pisałam ostatnio. Jednak zanim je pokażę, muszę poczynić jeszcze pewne obserwacje.

True spider stuff

One of the Ischnothele caudata has eaten the other one and is happy to have the whole home for himself. His web is all over the box.

Jeden z moich Ischnothele caudata zjadł drugiego i się cieszy, że ma cały domek dla siebie. Całe pudełko jest wypełnione jego siecią.

All of my Eresus walckenaerius are have their own homes.

Wszystkie Eresus walckenaerius mają swoje własne domki.

I'm not as happy about Viridasius sp. sylvestriformes as I have only one left out of the four I had. All the three died after molting. This species has a tendency to build strange-looking nests which you can see in the picture below.

Ale nie jestem zbyt szczęśliwa z powodu Viridasius sp. sylvestriformes jako, że z czterech został mi tylko jeden. Wszystkie trzy padły po wylince. Ten gatunek ma zwyczaj budować dość dziwaczne gniazda. Jedno widać na zdjęciu poniżej.

Both Phidippus regius are alive and kicking :) Buying adult ones was worth it!

Stephanorrhina princeps bamptoni are finally transforming into beetles. I'm not too fortunate because so far only one male has appeared and it died a few days later :/

A lesson for the future

A week ago one of my Heteropoda lunula escaped. I was feeding her and she managed to get out of the container through a very narrow hole. If it comes to Heteropoda ssp. (and Viridasius ssp. as well) NEVER EVER underestimate these spiders! I mean their pace, not venom. These are not the spiders that run, they literally teleport! It's not a joke! They can move so fast that you won't even realize the spider's not here. I'm usually too lazy to go to the bathroom and feed my spiders there. I always assume that being cautious will be enough. But in this case it's not enough. When my Heteropoda davidbowie were small, they were really wild. Once one of them escaped and it took it less than a second to teleport itself 2 meters away. Now, when they are adult, they are so docile that I could push them with a finger and they wouldn't even move. Coming back to the subject, I was very sorry about the loss of my H. lunula. But I still believed that it was possible to find the rascal. I even developed this habit of observing everything wherever I was at home. And yesterday, when I entered the bathroom, I found it on the ceiling (yes, this spider can move on any surface). Once I approached, it performed the jump of its lifetime-it jumped 3 meters down from the ceiling to the bath. It it was a tarantula, it would be a lethal jump for sure. But thanks to its long legs, it somehow cushioned the fall. It still wasn't easy to catch it as it was running like crazy over the bath.
Tydzień temu uciekła mi jedna Heteropoda lunula. Podczas karmienia udało jej się zwiać przez małą szparkę. Jeśli chodzi o Heteropoda ssp. (a także Viridasius ssp.) ZAWSZE trzeba pamiętać o ich tempie. To są pająki, które nie biegają, tylko się teleportują! Nie żartuję! Potrafią poruszać się w takim tempie, że nawet nie zorientujesz się, że pająka już tam nie ma. Zazwyczaj nie chce mi się karmić pająków w łazience. Zawsze wychodzę z założenia, że wystarczy ostrożność. Ale w tym przypadku to nie wystarczy. Kiedy moje Heteropoda davidbowie były malutkie były prawdziwymi dzikusami. Jak mi jeden raz zwiał, to przemieszczenie się 2 metry dalej nie zajęło mu nawet sekundy. A teraz, jak już są dorosłe, to wydaje się, że mogłabym je popychać palcem, a one i tak się nie ruszą. Wracając do tematu, było mi przykro z powodu utraty H. lunula. Ale madal wierzyłam, że gdzieś znajdę łobuza. Nawet już wyrobiłam sobie taki odruch przyglądania się wszystkiemu wokół w całym domu. I wczoraj, gdy weszłam wieczorem do łazienki, znalazłam dziada na suficie (tak, te pajuny chodzą po każdej powierzchni). Jak tylko podeszłam, mój pająk wykonał skok życia-skoczył 3 metry w dół z sufitu do wanny. Gdyby to był ptasznik, z pewnością byłby to śmiertelny skok. Ale dzięki długim odnóżom, udało mu się jakoś zamortyzować upadek. I tak nie było łatwo go złapać, bo zaczął szaleć po całej wannie.

This is how it looks today. I don't dare open the box at the moment. The spider was hungry and munched a big mealworm as soon as it calmed down (not the one in the photo, that's the spare one in case it's still hungry ;) ).
Tak wygląda dzisiaj. Nie mam w tej chwili odwagi otworzyć pudełka. Pająk był głodny i od razu wciął dużego mącznika (nie tego ze zdjęcia, ten jest na zapas gdyby jeszcze zgłodniała). 

Later that evening I made a breeding attempt of my Heteropoda davidbowie. I really can't say if my male is mature now. It's so easy to judge it in tarantulas, but in the case of true spiders it's a mystery. Anyway, the male looked a little interested in the female, but was too shy to approach it.
Tego samego wieczoru próbowałam dopuścić moje Heteropoda davidbowie. Naprawdę trudno powiedzieć czy mój samiec jest już dojrzały. Łatwo to ocenić u ptaszników, ale u pająków właściwych jest to dla mnie zagadką. W każdym razie, samiec wydawał się odrobinę zainteresowany samicą, ale był zbyt nieśmiały żeby się zbliżyć.

Snake update

It's been almost 10 months since I bought my male snake and he is finally getting used to me (though I can't call him tame). After so long, 3 days ago I managed to get him out of the tank and allow him to "walk" round my arms. If only he knew what surprises were awaiting him in the next two days.
The first one was a tragic one and I feel so sorry about it :( You see, I have two cats. They got used to my exotics long ago. They like to knock at the glass from time to time, but they can't get into the terrariums. One of my cats developed great interest in the snake tank. She could knock at the tank for hours. The snake himself got used to that and not only did he ignore the cat, but, with time, he also started to approach the front to observe the cat. The glass doors are secured and too heavy for the cat to open. But 3 days ago the cat somehow managed to slide the door open and she got access to the snake. I was terrified to see my cats paws in the tank and the snake escaping! For a few hours I couldn't find out if he was wounded as he hid and didn't want to come out. In the morning I got him out and found out he had a small cut. I moved him to a small container for observation. Fortunately, he is energetic as if nothing happened. But, as a precaution, I apply special ointment twice a day.
But hey, thanks to this accident I can finally see him in his full glory ;) He's a handsome beast :)
Mojego wężyka kupiłam prawie 10 miesięcy temu i dopiero teraz się do mnie przyzwyczaja (choć nie nazwałabym tego oswojeniem). Dopiero po tak długim czasie, 3 dni temu udało mi się wyciągnąć go z terrarium żeby popełzał sobie po moich rękach. Gdyby tylko wiedział jakie niespodzianki czekają go w ciągu najbliższych dwóch dni.
Pierwsza niestety była bardzo nieprzyjemna i jest mi z tego powodu bardzo przykro :( Mam dwa koty. Przyzwyczaiły się do mojej egzotycznej kolekcji dawno temu. Lubią sobie czasem popukać w szyby, ale nie ma możliwości, żeby dostały się do terrarium. Jedna z moich kocic jest szczególnie zainteresowana terrarium węża. Mogłaby pukać w nie godzinami. Wąż już się do niej przyzwyczaił i nie tylko ją ignoruje, ale czasem nawet zaciekawiony zbliża się do szyby, żeby poobserwować kota. Drzwiczki do terrariów są zabezpieczone i są też zbyt ciężkie, żeby kot je otworzył. Ale 3 dni temu kotka jakimś cudem dała radę odsunąć drzwiczki i dostać się do węża. Byłam przerażona gdy zobaczyłam kocie łapki w terrarium i uciekającego węża! Przez kilka godzin nie wiedziałam czy jest ranny, bo schował się i nie chciał wyjść. Rano wyciągnęłam go z terra i zobaczyłam małą rankę. Przeniosłam go na obserwację do małego pojemnika. Na szczęście był energiczny jakby nic się nie stało. Ale, na wszelki wypadek, smaruję mu zadrapanie dwa razy dziennie specjalną maścią.

I know this sounds light-hearted now, but believe me-I wasn't as calm as I'm now. 

Wiem, że brzmi to teraz bardzo beztrosko, ale uwierzcie mi-nie byłam taka spokojna jak w tej chwili. 

It was a coincidence that the accident happened a day before I received a female for him. Honestly speaking, I wasn't even planning to buy a female. But some time ago I saw one breeder's photos of his Corngaster x Pantherophis guttatus hybrids and I instantly fell in love with them. Unfortunately, they weren't for sale. I decided then that if they ever become available, I'll buy a female for sure. And it happened! I bought a cute little female hybrid :) She looks really unusual.
Zbiegiem okoliczności było to, że ten wypadek zdarzył się dzień przed tym jak otrzymałam dla niego samicę. Szczerze powiedziawszy, nie planowałam zakupu samicy. Ale jakiś czas temu zobaczyłam zdjęcia węży pewnego hodowcy, któremu udało się stworzyć hybrydy Corngaster x Pantherophis guttatus i od razu się w nich zakochałam. Niestety nie były na sprzedaż. Postanowiłam, że jeśli jednak zacznie je sprzedawać, jak nic kupię samicę. I tak też się stało. Kupiłam śliczną małą hybrydkę :) Wygląda naprawdę przepięknie.

The first picture presents her in her traveling chamber, the second-how curious she was when she got her new home and in the third one this is how she looked today when I woke her up in the morning.
Of course, I don't intend to keep them together. Firstly, she is too small now. And secondly, a pair of corn snakes shouldn't be kept together (to avoid male's pressure and cannibalism). The male will stay in his big terrarium, while the female will have her own, much smaller, container (smaller because she is going to be a small specimen-her parents were 70-80 cm long).
Na pierwszym zdjęciu jest jeszcze w pojemniku, w którym podróżowała, drugie zdjęcie pokazuje jaka z niej ciekawa istotka, a na trzecim widać jak wyglądała dziś rano gdy ją obudziłam.
Oczywiście nie mam zamiaru trzymać ich razem. Po pierwsze, jest na razie za mała. A po drugie, nie należy trzymać parki węży zbożowych razem (możliwość kanibalizmu oraz sytuacji, gdzie samiec zamęczy samicę). Samiec pozostanie w swoim dużym terrarium, a samica będzie miała swój własny, mniejszy pojemnik (mniejszy, ponieważ to będzie raczej mały okaz-jej rodzice mieli po 70-80 cm).
