Project Terrarium 2014 -Day 2, 3, 4-

On the second day, before even starting the real thing, I had to improve the electricity. There's not much to say here. I just wanted to have one fluorescent lamp and one bulb in each tank. Additionally, I've decided to install electronic ballasts that prevent fluorescent lamps from blinking, consume less power, and make the lamp switch on instantly (without the characteristic initial blinking). Playing with wires took more time than I had expected.
Drugiego dnia, jeszcze przed rozpoczęciem głównej roboty, musiałam trochę poprawić elektrykę. Nie za wiele mam do powiedzenia w tym temacie. Chciałam po jednej świetlówce i żarówce w obu terrariach. Dodatkowo zamontowałam też stateczniki elektroniczne, żeby świetlówka nie mrugała, zżerała mniej prądu i włączała się natychmiastowo (bez tego migotania charakterystycznego dla świetlówek). Zabawa przewodami zabrała mi trochę więcej czasu niż się spodziewałam.

The third and fourth day brought the little anxiety I always feel when I have to give my creation some shape. Will it look good? Will it be comfortable for my lizards? That I can't answer now, but I can only hope everything's going to be okay.
Trzeci i czwarty dzień przyniosły mały niepokój, który zawsze czuję, kiedy mam nadać kształt mojemu tworowi. Czy będzie dobrze się prezentować? Czy będzie wygodne dla jaszczurek? Na te pytania nie jestem w stanie na razie odpowiedzieć, ale mam nadzieję, że wszystko będzie ok.

This year I'm using a technique I've never tried before. I can't tell you yet what my plan is, but you can see below that I've taken a different approach to the skeleton of the terrariums.
W tym roku eksperymentuję z techniką, której jeszcze dotąd nigdy nie użyłam. Jeszcze nie mogę Wam zdradzić mojego planu, ale widzicie, że tym razem inaczej podeszłam do samego szkieletu ścianki.

Three years ago I chose styrofoam for the base, but it was BIIIIG misunderstanding. Firstly, sculpting in styrofoam was a nightmare (if you don't have a hot wire device). White specks EVERYWHERE!!! I bet there are still some hiding somewhere after those three years. And secondly, what's more important is that once mortar dried, the styrofoam shrank a little bit creating a tiny gap between the styrofoam and the wooden side of the terrarium. Feeder insects easily used that gap and set up colonies which I had no access to. This is why this time I've decided to use fitting foam. It sticks so much, that it is very hard to remove even with special tools (which you can see in the picture presenting the snake tank where I used a lot of fitting foam).
Trzy lata temu zdecydowałam się na użycie styropianu w roli bazy i to było WIELKIE nieporozumienie. Po pierwsze, rzeźbienie w styropianie to koszmar (o ile nie ma się specjalnego przyrządu do cięcia na gorąco). Białe kulki dosłownie WSZĘDZIE!!! Założę się, że po tych trzech latach nadal jakieś się gdzieś chowają. A po drugie, co najważniejsze to to, że jak zaprawa wyschła, to styropian ociupinkę się skurczył tworząc malutką przestrzeń między styropianem a drewnianym bokiem terrarium. Karmówka bez problemu to wykorzystała tworząc kolonie, do których nie miałam dostępu. Dlatego zdecydowała się tym razem użyć pianki montażowej. Przykleja się tak mocno, że ciężko ją usunąć nawet za pomocą specjalnych narzędzi (co widać na zdjęciu z terrarium węża, gdzie użyłam sporo pianki). 

After two days of rotating the terrariums and applying generous amounts of fitting foam, I achieved this:

Project Terrarium 2014 -Day 1-

It's been three years since I did my previous "Project Terrarium". My agamas' and cornsnake's terrariums started to look ugly, so I've decided to do some renovation this year. Well, the agamas had to live in an almost empty terrarium for over half a year due to a coccidiosis issue.
Minęły już trzy lata od kiedy zrobiłam ostatni "Projekt Terrarium". Terraria agamek i zbożówki zaczęły wyglądać nieciekawie, więc zdecydowałam się przeprowadzić w tym roku renowację. Agamki musiały mieszkać w prawie pustym terrarium przez ponad pół roku z powodu problemów z kokcydiami.

The cornsnake didn't mind the look of his terrarium, but I did.
Wąż nie miał nic przeciwko wyglądowi swojego domku, ale ja miałam.

It could wait for another year or two, but since I was planning to do the agamas' tank, I could as well redecorate this one too.
Mogło to jeszcze poczekać z rok czy dwa, ale jako, że planowałam zająć sięterra agamek, uznałam, że nad tym też mogę popracować. 

So the plan is: to make a new decoration for my agamas (Laudakia stellio brachydactyla), and transform the snake terrarium into another desert terrarium (the snake didn't benefit from the height of the tank, so from now on he will live in a huge transparent plastic box). I'm planning to buy two new species of lizards this year, one of them will be another species of agamas that will live in snake's tank.
Plan jest taki: zrobić nową ściankę dla agam (Laudakia stellio brachydactyla) i zmienić wężowe terrarium w drugie terrarium pustynne (wąż na ogół nie korzystał z wyższych partii terrarium, więc teraz zamieszka w dużym przezroczystym plastikowym pojemniku).Zamierzam w tym roku kupić dwa nowe gatunki jaszczurek, jeden z nich to będą inne agamy, które zamieszkają w terrarium węża.  

The first step was to get rid of the whole decoration in the snake terrarium. The fitting foam that I used three years ago has become really hard.
Pierwszym etapem było pozbycie się całej dekoracji w wężowym terrarium. Pianka montażowa, której użyłam 3 lata temu bardzo stwardniała.

I had to do it the rough way. It was very tough for my girly hands, but hey-I wanted to do this :)
Musiałam ostro sięza to zabrać. Nie było to proste dla moich dziewczęcych rączek, ale sama się o to prosiłam :)

The agamas' tank was a lot easier to prepare ;) I did the dirty the dirty work already in January.

Znacznie łatwiej było przygotować terrarium agamek ;) Brudną robotę wykonałam już w styczniu.

I'm now equipped with enough stuff, so I will continue the work tomorrow. I've decided to decorate the two terrariums simultaneously.

Jestem wyposażona we wszystko co potrzeba, więc jutro kontynuuję robotę. Zadecydowałam, że będę robić oba terraria jednocześnie.

How to pimp your terrarium.

It's been a long time since I last wrote anything here. Too long. I've had a lot on my mind, I had to fight for the life of my favourite lizard, etc. Well, it's a subject for another time.
Minęło sporo czasu od kiedy coś tu napisałam. Zbyt dużo. Miałam sporo na głowie, musiałam walczyć o życie mojej ulubionej jaszczurki, etc. Ale to temat na inny wpis.

What I want to show you today is the way to make your old terrarium look better. Sure, changing the inside can do the job. But not entirely. You still have the box part that should look...well...representative. I'm pretty sure that some people, having furniture in a state like this, would get rid of the stuff ASAP. But why should you throw away things that still work?
To co chcę Wam dziś pokazać to to, jak zrobić, żeby Wasze terrarium wyglądało lepiej. No pewnie, zmiana wystroju może wiele dać. Ale nie całkowicie. Nadal pozostaje samo pudło, które powinno wyglądać...hmmm...reprezentatywnie. Jestem pewna, że część osób mając mebel w takim stanie, natychmiast by się go pozbyło. Ale po co wyrzucać coś, co nadal działa?

My terrarium tanks looked plain ugly. And, let me tell you, they were ugly from the very beginning. I got them almost for free, but they have always been badly made. With time, my cats started tearing the thing to pieces. When I lived with my parents, I didn't care too much about it since all my furniture was rather old. But now that I have my own place to live and the furniture looks good, the appearance of my terrarium started to horrify me. Well, have a look yourself:
Moje terraria wyglądały ohydnie. I powiem Wam, że wyglądały paskudnie od początku. Otrzymałam je prawie za darmo, ale zostały bardzo kiepsko wykonane. Z czasem, moje koty zaczęły rozrywać mi je na strzępy. Kiedy mieszkałam z rodzicami, nie przejmowałam się tym za bardzo, bo wszystkie moje meble wyglądały na wiekowe. Ale teraz, gdy mieszkam na swoim i meble wyglądają po prostu elegancko, wygląd mojego terrarium zaczął mnie odstraszać. No patrzcie sami:

What can you do with this? Well, a big roll of self-adhesive foil might do the job. With the help of my kittens, I got down to work.
Co można na to poradzić? Cóż, spora rolka taśmy samoprzylepnej może wszystko odmienić. Z pomocą moich kociaków, zabrałam się do roboty.

I chose matt black foil, which looks good, but in practice draws quite a lot of dirt. Nevertheless, it looks waaaay better. But I have to warn you: attaching this thing is a real chore! Bigger sheets will try to stick to literally everything. Try to get some help for another human - cats won't help you much in this case. Silly me ;)
Wybrałam czarną matową folię, która w sumie wygląda dobrze, ale niestety w praktyce przyciąga spore ilości kurzu. Nie mniej jednak, terrarium wygląda znacznie lepiej. Ale muszę Was ostrzec: przyklejanie tego dziadostwa to kawał roboty! Większe arkusze będą próbowały przykleić się do dosłownie wszystkiego. Postarajcie się poprosić o pomoc drugiego człowieka - koty nie bardzo się nadają do tej roboty. O ja głupia ;)

The only problem was that my terrarium is really badly cut, the wooden parts hardly match. After a few hours of sweat and tears, I got this effect:
Jedynym problemem było to, że moje terrarium jest bardzo źle powycinane, płyty ledwie do siebie pasują. Po kilku godzinach potu i łez, otrzymałam taki efekt: 

Could be worse, you could say. But a perfectionist as I am, I could not stand the sight of failure. I needed something that would draw attention from those wrinkled patches. So I attached some butterflies, also made of self-adhesive foil.
Można by powiedzieć, że mogło być gorzej. Ale jako, że jestem perfekcjonistką, nie mogłam znieść widoku porażki. Potrzebowałam czegoś, co odwróciłoby uwagę od tych pomarszczonych kawałków. Przykleiłam więc motylki, również zrobione z folii samoprzylepnej.

I guess this whole makeover was not a bad idea at all. The terrarium matches the colour of he rest of my furniture, and looks a bit better and more colourful. I really recommend this method when you want to refresh not only the look of your terrarium, but also the rest of your furniture.
Myślę, że cała ta przemiana nie była złym pomysłem. Terrarium pasuje teraz kolorem do reszty wyposażenia, wygląda lepiej i bardziej kolorowo. Polecam tę metodę jeśli będziecie chcieli odświeżyć wygląd nie tylko terrarium ale i reszty umeblowania.

New home

I've lived here for over 5 months and I still haven't shown you the organisation of my collection. I'm going to show you both the animals and plants.
Mieszkam tu od ponad 5 miesięcy i nadal nie pochwaliłam się organizacją mojej kolekcji. Zaprezentuję zarówno część zwierzęcą jak i roślinną.

Let me start with the animals. This subject used to be the source of my fear, as I didn't know if my collection would fit into the new flat. Although the two of us have only two rooms, my terrariums fit perfectly in the smaller room (and I still have even more space for my spider collection ;) ). I feel so relieved :D The main three terrariums, with 4 smaller containers, stand separately.
Zacznę od zwierzaków. Ten temat był dla mnie źródłem stresu przez długi czas, jako że nie wiedziałam czy moja kolekcja pomieści się w nowym mieszkaniu. Choć mamy tylko dwa pokoje, moje terraria spokojnie mieszczą się w mniejszym pokoju (i nadal mam miejsce na więcej pająków ;) ). Czuję wielką ulgę :D Główne 3 terraria stoją sobie oddzielnie wraz z czterema mniejszymi pudełkami.

If it wasn't for the switch on the wall, I could probably have even wider tanks. The bottom tank belongs to my 2 Laudakia stellio brachydactyla, the middle one is my red cornsnake's home, and at the top there are 2 Sceloporus malachiticus. The smaller containers belong to the horned frog, the smaller female cornsnake, Grammostola pulchra, and Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens.
Gdyby nie ten włącznik na ścianie, mogłabym mieć jeszcze szersze terraria. W dolnym siedzą moje dwa Laudakia stellio brachydactyla, w środkowym mieszka czerwony wężulek zbożowy, a u góry są dwa Sceloporus malachiticus. W mniejszych pudełkach mam żabkę rogatą, małą wężulkę zbożową, Grammostola pulchra i Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens.

On the other side of the room, I have a small Phelsuma klemmeri tank and most of my spiders.
Po drugiej stronie pokoju znajduje się małe terrarium dla Phelsuma klemmeri i większość pajęczej kolekcji.

The spiders have now got their own cabinet, which probably isn't the essence of beauty, but it has a rather practical side-at least my fiance and people that visit us believe that they are safer thanks to the glass door ;)

It looks like my pets don't feel any difference between the old and the new home. One of the first things I did when I moved here was to put my Laudakia stellio brachydactyla couple into the basement for brumation. I really want them to breed. Unfortunately, they still are not sexually attracted to one another ;(

Pająki mają teraz swoją własną gablotę, która może nie jest najpiękniejsza, ale za to ma dosyć praktyczną stronę-przynajmniej mój narzeczony i nasi goście czują się bezpiczniej dzięki szklanym drzwiczkom ;) Wygląda na to, że zwierzaki nie odczuły specjalnej różnicy między domami. Jedną z pierwszych rzeczy jakie zrobiłam kiedy się tu przeprowadziłam, było wyniesienie parki Laudakia stellio brachydactyla do piwnicy, żeby się trochę pohibernowasły. Bardzo chcę je rozmnożyć. Niestety, nadal nie są sobą zbyt zainteresowane ;(

But I can't complain about other lizards. Sceloporus malachiticus keep copulating (but I still can't see the outcome), while my Phelsumas have finally laid eggs :)

Ale nie mogę narzekać na pozostałe jaszczurki. Sceloporus malachiticus kopulują (ale nadal nie widzę rezultatów), a felsumki złożyły w końcu jajka :)

 If it comes to my plants, as you know, I used to keep them outside. Although they had their own rack in the garden, I couldn't avoid the rain to overwater my cacti (which was the reason of their death in many cases). For the winter season, I used to put them in the basement, which also was a bit hard for them. My main objective, after I moved in, was to put windows on the balcony to create sort of an orangery. Without them, the balcony was useless-not only would it be impossible to keep plants in winter there, but is located next to a busy street which causes a lot of dirt. 

Co do roślin, jak wiadomo, dotąd trzymałam je na dworze. Chociaż maiły swój własny regał w ogrodzie, nie mogłam uniknąć deszczu zalewającego moje kaktusy (co nieraz było przyczyną ich śmierci). Na zimę wynosiłam je do piwnicy, co też było dla nich dość ciężkie Moim głównym celem po przeprowadzce była zabudowa balkonu, żeby stworzyć taką jakby oranżerię. Bez okien balkon był bezużyteczny-nie dość że roślin nie można by tam trzymać zimą, to jeszcze balkon położony jest tuż obok ruchliwej ulicy, przez co zawsze pełno tam było czarnego brudu.

After we placed the windows, my fiance painted the walls white and we installed 2 racks for the plants.

Po wstawieniu okien mój narzeczony pomalował ściany na biało i wstawiliśmy 2 regały na rośliny.

Although the racks are made of plastic, they are quite sturdy.

Choć regały są z plastiku, są dość solidne.

And finally I brought the plants from my parents' house.

I w końcu przywiozłam rośliny z domu rodziców.

I devoted one rack to cacti and caudiciforms, and the second one to other plants, mainly african violets. I even bought some bonsai (or I made some myself).

Jeden regał przeznaczyłam na kaktusy i kaudeksy, a drugi na inne rośliny, głównie fiołki afrykańskie. Kupiłam też kilka bonsai (niektóre sam zrobiłam).

I really didn't know what to expect. This experiment could end up in a disaster. After all, the plants were used to very different conditions. Moreover, the balcony is on the eastern side, which gives them less light. But the results stunned me! The plants are more than happy. They grow like crazy, and those that bloomed in June/July are blooming now! This is the best thing I could do to my cacti. The conditions resemble those in a greenhouse which visibly boosts their growth. I'm so happy about it! Now, according to my fiance, I spend way too much time staring at the plants. But I can't help it when I see some differences every few hours :)

Naprawdę nie wiedziałam czego się spodziewać. Ten eksperyment mógł się zakończyć katastrofą. W końcu rośliny były przyzwyczajone do innych warunków. Co więcej, balkon jest po stronie wschodniej, co daje mniej światła. Ale efekt zwalił mnie z nóg! Rośliny są bardziej niż szczęśliwe. Rosną jak szalone, a te co kwitły w czerwcu/lipcu, kwitną już teraz! To najlepsza rzecz jaką mogłam zrobić dla moich kaktusów. Warunki przypominają szklarniowe, co wyraźnie przyspiesza ich wzrost. Bardzo się cieszę! Teraz, według narzeczonego, spędzam za dużo czasu gapiąc się na rośliny. Ale co mogę poradzić, kiedy różnice widać już po kilku godzinach? :)
